Harvard Medical School Diabetes: A plan for living

Harvard Medical School Diabetes: A plan for living Review

Nearly 24 million Americans roughly one of every 13 people have diabetes, a disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. More than 90% of them have type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin (the hormone that enables cells to draw sugar from the blood for energy) and not enough insulin is produced to overcome the resistance. In fact, the number of adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes has more than quadrupled since the early 1980s. As a result, many experts consider type 2 diabetes an epidemic a term once reserved only for infectious diseases. Consequently, this report focuses almost exclusively on type 2 diabetes, and includes only a brief explanation of the related, but far less common, type 1 diabetes, a disease that usually first appears during childhood or adolescence. This report describes the basics of how your body metabolizes sugar, how and when to monitor your blood sugar, and how to cope with both short- and long-term complications of diabetes, which include heart attacks and stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. It also includes detailed, updated information about weight loss strategies, medications, and alternative treatments for diabetes.

No Added Sugar - growing up with type 1 diabetes

No Added Sugar - growing up with type 1 diabetes Review

Fibi Ward, now 14, writes: 'At the time I was diagnosed [aged 13], I wanted to read something written by somebody of my own age, from their perspective, about how they dealt with being diagnosed, and to reassure myself that all the fears and worries that I had were normal. However,I have not seen any such book on the market and have decided to record my own experiences so that other children and teenagers who are newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can get some benefit and comfort by reading about and relating to them.'

According to Diabetes UK, 10,000 to 15,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every year. The peak age of diagnosis is between 10 and 14 years. Coming so early in life, such a diagnosis can feel like a life sentence, both for the young person and for their family.

'I was scared about returning to school, ' continues Fibi, 'and I didn't want anyone at all to know that I was diabetic. Also, I feared that I would never have a boyfriend because I would be different to all the other girls in my class. I was even frightened about going to bed in case I became hypoglycaemic in the night and never woke up. These are just a few of the anxieties I had, some of which may seem silly but which were a big deal at the time. I hope that by reading my book other people will be reassured that there is no need to worry about these things and that they will gain some comfort from knowing they are not the only ones who have been through it.'

'I have also included some humorous anecdotes because it isn't all doom and gloom, and there are practical tips, for example on doing insulin injections, going to sleepovers and parties and doing P.E. and sports. I do not claim to be a medical expert, but my diabetic nurse has checked everything and made some helpful suggestions. '

Pancreas, Islet and Stem Cell Transplantation for Diabetes

Pancreas, Islet and Stem Cell Transplantation for Diabetes Review

Pancreas transplantation has rapidly moved from an experimental procedure associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality to a mainstream technique with excellent patient and graft survival. Over 30,000 pancreas transplants have already been performed. The value of pancreas transplantation however must be balanced against the risk of the operative procedure and the innovative long-term immunosuppressive therapy. The indications for this procedure and the selection of the patients are critical to ensure low mortality and any improvements in quality of life.

This second edition reflects recent advances in the field, especially the increasing number of islet transplantations and the growing interest in stem cell research applicable to this condition. It provides an authoritative account on the current status of the whole organ pancreas transplantation and islet and pancreatic stem cell transplantation.

Diabetes on Your Own Terms: * Enjoy guilt-free blood glucose control * Enjoy the foods you love * Live a stress-free life with few compli (Marlowe Diabetes Library) Review

Leading diabetes educator and dietitian Janis Roszler breaks new ground in Diabetes on Your Own Terms. This is the first book to underscore for everyone living with diabetes that managing diabetes doesn't have to equate to deprivation. A case in point is when Douglas Cairns, a flight instructor with the Royal British air force, was diagnosed with diabetes and lost use of his pilot’s license. For the next several years, diabetes ran his life. Douglas had to find a new profession and spent a good deal of his time fighting blood sugar highs and lows. Then he heard that the U.S. allows individuals with diabetes to fly as long as their diabetes is well-controlled. Douglas now had a goal and a chance to reclaim the activity he loved. He took control of his diabetes by setting realistic goals, attained an American license, and recently became the first person with diabetes to fly solo around the world.

Janis Roszler is here to advise how not to let diabetes prevent you from having the life you want; to not accept NO for an answer, and let diabetes get you down. Like Douglas, you can set realistic goals and soar!

Type I Diabetes: Molecular, Cellular, and Clinical Immunology

Type I Diabetes: Molecular, Cellular, and Clinical Immunology Review

Type I diabetes is rapidly becoming one of the most studied autoimmune disorders. The existence of two spontaneous animal models, transgenic models which both create or suppress disease, coupled with the clinical importance of the illness with millions affected and thousands killed each year, has led to enormous efforts by an international groups of investigators to understand, treat and prevent type I diabetes.

This timely new book presents a synthesis of the molecular and cellular immunology of type I diabetes by basic immunologists and physician investigators at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. At this center, T cell clones able to produce diabetes were discovered, the first antigen with which they react characterized, combinatorial, biochemical autoantibody screening for diabetes risk was recently published and multiple trials for the prevention of type I diabetes were carried out. This volume discusses the latest research in this rapidly developing field, including diagnostic strategies and therapies being developed to prevent this disease.
