Diabetes Cookbook For Dummies

Diabetes Cookbook For Dummies Review

Diabetes Cookbook For Dummies Feature

  • No Prescription Required - Over The Counter (OTC)
  • Does not qualify for FSA
If you or a family member has diabetes, food preparation may seem like a chore or a deprivation. What can you cook that tastes good and fits the diabetes guidelines? The authors of Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, diabetes expert Alan Rubin (who also wrote Diabetes for Dummies) and registered dietician Fran Stach, have come up with dishes that will please not just the person with diabetes but the whole family. The diabetes diet is healthy for all of us, and if we can make it taste good, we all benefit.

That's where this book shines. The 112 recipes are as creative and tasty as they are healthy, yet most take a half hour or less of preparation (plus cooking time). Recipes include Soy Waffles, Crispy Corn French Toast, Portobello Paté, Carrot Soup with Leek and Blood Orange, Mango Tortilla Salad, Oriental Beef and Noodle Salad, and Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil, plus a variety of fish, meat, and poultry entrées. Some of the recipes were created by chef Denise Sharf; others were contributed by gourmet restaurants. All recipes include nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, and exchanges.

Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. The book also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tips for visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounce of cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparation steps to help novice cooks.

Like the whole For Dummies line, the style is simple, friendly, clever, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, such as, "Don't go to a paint store and expect to get thinner there." -- Joan Price The fun and easy way to eat a well-balanced diabetic diet

Want to create healthy meals that are diabetic friendly? This revised and updated third edition of Diabetes Cookbook For Dummies shows you how easy it can be to manage diabetes through diet, including the latest information on diabetes testing, monitoring, and maintenance, as well as delicious new recipes and nutritional information. This edition also includes a new section that focuses on vegetarian dishes and a new chapter on encouraging a Type 1 diabetic child to eat properly.

  • Features changes in fat, carbohydrate and protein recommendations that parallel the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association regarding meal plans
  • Includes new ideas about restaurant eating, including new menu items at fast food locations as well as revised tips on food shopping and setting up the diabetic kitchen
  • Offers 100+ new and revised diabetic recipes

Complete with ways to involve children in meal planning and preparation, Diabetes Cookbook For Dummies will help you improve your diet and your health!

BOOK EXCERPT
Diabetes Diet
The diabetic diet is a very important aspect of natural diabetes treatment since the diabetic foods can aid blood sugar regulation. Dietary modifications that you can institute to complement your conventional diabetes mellitus treatment include:

1. Begin your day with a high fiber breakfast cereal as it is an excellent source of water soluble fiber which reduces the rate at which carbohydrates are absorbed and thus maintains steadier blood sugar levels. Increase the benefits of your breakfast by adding a cup of chopped fruit to your cereal.

2. Increase your intake of beans as they are rich in water soluble fiber which reduces the rate at which the blood glucose rises after meals. This helps with the stabilization of blood glucose levels throughout the day. They are also filling and thus valuable when trying to limit your calorie intake.

3. Increase your intake of vegetables to 5 servings each day as they are rich in nutrients and fiber which reduces the rapid rise in blood sugar levels after a meal. Vegetables are also filing, low in fat and calories and thus help one lose excess weight. Note that 1 serving is I cup of raw or ½ cup of cooked vegetables.

4. Increase your intake of magnesium which may help achieve better blood sugar control by eating ample spinach and broccoli every day.

5. Increase your chromium intake as it may be beneficial in blood sugar regulation by eating cheese, meat, brown rice and other whole grains.

Atkins Diabetes Revolution LP : The Groundbreaking Approach to Preventing and Controlling Type 2 Diabetes

Atkins Diabetes Revolution LP : The Groundbreaking Approach to Preventing and Controlling Type 2 Diabetes Review

The twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes are a 21st-century time bomb. The Atkins organisation is renowned for their work on diabetes and this book sets out a controlled carb diet and nutrition regime to help people lose weight and prevent, treat and even reverse diabetes. The conventional 'healthy' Western diet, based upon large amounts of carbohydrates and a small amount of protein and fat, results for many people in a state of hyperinsulinism, a key factor in developing diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. The Atkins nutritional plan, based on eating the foods that balance your hormones to regulate blood sugar levels, controls the production of insulin and is therefore a great tool in treating and preventing diabetes. The Atkins plan also promotes healthy weight loss and freedom from other conditions, such as high blood pressure and heart disease. The book contains all the nutritional information diabetes sufferers need to plan their new, healthy diet, as well as recipes so the plan can be put into practice.
